The secret to finishing your ideas🚀

When you start producing electronic music you have many questions like: “How do I EQ Kicks?” or “How to mix my basslines?” or more crucial “How do I make my leads to sounds like…?” I am going to be very honest with you, we all have had these questions! When you start your music production journey there are so many unknowns and it can get super frustrating when you have your super amazing idea and get stuck over something simple as EQing your bass to make it sound perfect.

As a music producer who has been in the game for a while, I know first-hand how getting bogged down in technical aspects of production can be detrimental to creative flow and slow down the process of finishing a track. It’s not uncommon for artists to obsess over the finer details like EQing kicks or perfecting basslines, but this can lead to frustration and ultimately, the abandonment of a project altogether.

Personally, I’ve experienced this phenomenon countless times. I would get stuck on a sound or a particular element, and end up spending hours trying to perfect it. Unfortunately, this often results in losing the creative flow and inspiration that led me to start the project.

You know, when you wake up each day you are in a different mindset than yesterday. You have a mug of freshly ground coffee, and you hop into the studio and start working. You enjoy yourself and all of a sudden you stop to make sure the kick sounds epic! Suddenly it is 10 pm and the day is over. The next day you sit over your new amazing “Kick” just to find out it sounds like crap! And your hit idea? well, that is gone for good.

It actually took me almost a decade to realize why I am not finishing my tracks and have hundreds of projects with strange names and numbers. I wasn’t finishing them when I was in the zone and I got stuck in place fixing the bass, the kick, the vocal chop, etc.

Here’s the thing – the creative process is about trusting your intuition and letting your ideas flow freely. When you’re in the zone or state of flow, it’s essential to ride that wave of inspiration and not let technical aspects like sound design or mixing hold you back. It’s important to keep in mind that there will be a lot of time for refinement later on in the process. Do not try to fix the sound, just keep on working, keep on adding your ideas, and enjoy the process. By doing so, you’ll be able to retain the initial creative energy that led you to start the project.

Getting stuck on a particular sound or technical element can ruin your creative flow and cause you to lose sight of the bigger picture.  I can’t even describe the feeling of having a productive time in the studio followed by a finished single later mixed and mastered and eventually released for people to have a chance to listen, dance and enjoy it.

Finish your track today and worry about the sound when it is done. We are musicians and we make music, not the best-sounding kicks in the world. So, keep on creating and trusting in your intuition – you never know where it might take you.

I hope this article will help you get your next hit finished and if you ever get stuck in a producer’s block have a look at the youtube video I made on this topic.

Thank you and have an amazing day in the studio!
