Stop Wasting Time & Finish Your Tracks: My Real Journey with Track Construction

Hey friends,

Today, we’re continuing where we left off in the last post—diving deeper into how to stop spending unnecessary time and money on unfinished tracks and finally start creating music faster, more efficiently, and with a clear purpose. In the previous post, we talked about setting your intention and getting your ideas down on Day One. If you missed it, you can read that here. Today, let’s move on to track construction—what it is, why it matters, and how you can start applying it immediately.

Back When I Had No Clue What I Was Doing…

Let me be honest with you. Back in the day, when I was working on tracks, I was all over the place. I didn’t know what I was doing. One minute I’d be making the drop, then suddenly I’d switch to the intro, then mess with the mixdown, maybe do a bit of a breakdown… It was pure chaos.

🎧 I was scrambling around without direction.
🎼 I had no clear plan.
📁 And for every finished track, I had 100 abandoned projects—with names like:

“Really Good Idea 12345”
“Track ABC”
“New Banger v14 final (for real this time)” 😅

You know exactly what I’m talking about. And I hated it. I wanted to finish music, not just start it. But I couldn’t figure out how. It took me years to find the answer. But once I did, everything changed.

Step 1: You’ve Set Your Intention—Now Build Your Track Like a House

So, you’ve set your intention. You know your idea. You have a vibe in mind. What’s next?

👉 Track construction—start to finish.

Think of it like this: If you’re building a house, you don’t just start throwing bricks around. You need a blueprint. You need a plan. And without it? You’re just guessing. It’s the same with music. Before you design the sound, you need to draw the shape of your track.

So here’s what I want you to do:

  1. Sit down. Open your DAW.
  2. Start mapping out your track.
  • Where’s your intro?
  • Where’s your build-up? How long is it?
  • Where’s the drop, the breakdown, the outro?
  1. Then start laying down your basic elements:
  • Kick drum from start to finish
  • Percussion patterns
  • Bassline
  • FX
  • Placeholder leads or melodies

🎛 Don’t worry about how it sounds right now.
This is not about mixing or sound design yet—it’s about building the skeleton of the track so you always know what comes next.

“But I Don’t Know How to Build a Track…”

If you’re thinking, “Okay, but how do I even know what structure to follow?” Here’s a golden trick I’ve used and taught to my students:

🔁 Reference Your Favorite Tracks

  • Take a track you love—something that always gives you goosebumps.
  • Drop it into your DAW on a separate channel.
  • Study the arrangement. Listen. Look. Feel the form.
  • Now copy the structure. Not the sounds—just the construction.

This is not plagiarism. This is learning. The person who made that track probably has years of experience. By following their structure, you’re learning what works and why. Think of it like tracing in art. When painters are learning, they often start by tracing outlines to understand shapes and proportions. Even pros do it sometimes! You’re doing the same here. You’re studying the flow of music so you can internalize it.

Your Construction is Your Freedom

Once you have your full track construction laid out:

✅ You’ll never get stuck asking “What should I do next?”
✅ You’ll stop randomly jumping between sections.
✅ You’ll finish music so much faster.
✅ And most importantly—you’ll stay connected to the original idea you had when you started.

When the basic skeleton is there, you’re free to focus on the real magic—your melodies, your emotion, and your vision. And that’s what makes a track yours.
