Why Your Mix Collapses In Mono (And The Width Rules That Prevent It)

You finish the mix, it sounds huge on your monitors, wide and deep and expensive. Then the club plays it and half your low end has vanished. Or someone listens on a phone speaker and the whole thing sounds thin and hollow. Sound familiar? I had this problem for years, and the fix has nothing to do with buying a better imager. It’s about knowing which sounds are allowed to be wide, and which ones absolutely are not.

So let’s have a look at that.

Stereo width is a separation tool, not a “make it better” button

Here’s the mental shift that changed everything for me. Widening is not a polish stage you do at the end. It’s a mixing tool you reach for when two sounds are fighting for the same frequency range.

Think about it. You’ve got a mid-bass and a pluck both living around 200 to 600 Hz. You EQ one, you EQ the other, and they still sound like mush. Instead of carving another hole, take one of them and widen it. The moment you do, they separate. They’re no longer stacked on top of each other in the same spot.

And here’s the thing most people miss: the first bit of widening you apply gives you the most dramatic separation. Going from mono to 120% is a massive change. Going from 120% to 140% barely does anything except cause problems. So use it early, use it once, and stop.

The one rule that saves your low end

Keep everything below 150 Hz centred. That’s it. That’s the rule.

Your kick, your sub-bass, the low body of your mid-bass — all of it stays in the middle. The reason is simple: club systems fold the low end down to mono anyway, and if you’ve got stereo information down there, it cancels itself out. That’s exactly the “where did my bass go” moment I described at the top.

If you have a stereo element that’s causing phase problems in the low end, drop a Utility on it and set it to mono below 250 Hz. You keep the width up top where it does something musical, and the low end stays solid and centred. Same trick works on wide pads that are quietly eating your kick.

And when you check, don’t cut the sides below 150 Hz thinking you’re being safe — check the phase relationship properly first. Cutting the sides is a band-aid on a problem that usually lives somewhere else.

What to widen, and how much

This is roughly how I approach it in a normal uplifting track.

Leads. Utility width at 120 to 130 percent. That’s plenty. If you need more than that, the sound itself probably isn’t big enough and no imager is going to fix it.

Hats. This is where the Haas trick lives. Put a delay on your open hats, kill the feedback, kill the filter, and set the left and right times differently — 4 ms on the left, 12 ms on the right, at a reduced level. Suddenly they’re wide and shimmering and they haven’t moved a single dB in the low end. For general hat width, anywhere between 2 and 9 ms of offset works.

Closed vs open hats. Give them different pan positions. Closed hat slightly one way, open hat the other. Free separation, zero processing.

Pads and atmospheres. These can go wide, that’s their job. Just roll off the low end first so the width isn’t happening down where it hurts.

Kick, sub, mid-bass body. Centred. Always.

Master bus. If you want a little air, use mid-side EQ and push the width to around 118 percent on the high frequencies only. Not the whole spectrum. Just the top.

Now check it properly

Here’s the part everyone skips. Widening feels good, so nobody goes back and verifies it.

Hit mono. Right now, during the drop, not at the end of the session. Anything that drops in level or disappears when you collapse to mono is phase cancelling, and that’s information you’re losing on a club system, on a phone, on a laptop, on Instagram.

Watch the goniometer while you do it. If the display collapses into a thin vertical line on a sound that’s supposed to be wide, or spreads into a horizontal smear, you’ve got a phase problem, not a width problem. Those are two different things and they need two different fixes.

The order that works

If you take one thing from this, take the order.

  1. Get the sound right first. Width does not fix a weak sound.
  2. EQ and carve so elements aren’t stacked in the same range.
  3. Only then reach for width, and only on the elements that need separating.
  4. High-pass or mono the low end of anything you widened.
  5. Check in mono. Every single time.

Do it in that order and you stop having the “it sounded great at home” problem.

Try This Today

Open your current project, go to the loudest part of the drop, and hit the mono button. Just listen for ten seconds. Then A/B it against stereo and write down every element that got quieter or disappeared. That list is your mix’s actual weak spot, and it took you fifteen seconds to find it.

Fix the worst one — usually it’s a wide mid-bass or a stereo pad with too much low end — by dropping a Utility on it and monoing everything below 250 Hz. Then listen again.

Honestly, this one check has saved more of my tracks than any plugin I own.
