You add reverb to your lead and it suddenly sounds huge, atmospheric, placed in a real space. Perfect. Then you listen to the whole mix and something is wrong. The lead is there but it feels soft. The clap used to crack — now it blooms. The pluck had this tight, snappy quality and now it sort of… wafts in. The reverb gave you the space but took the punch.
So let’s have a look at what is actually happening here, and more importantly, how to fix it with one technique that you can set up in about two minutes.

The problem with reverb and punch
Reverb works by blurring time. That is not a flaw — that is the entire point of it. The reverb tail extends the sound forward in time, filling the space after the initial hit and creating the sense of a physical room or environment.
The problem is that this blur applies to everything, including the transient. The sharp initial crack of your clap, the tight snap of your pluck, the first milliseconds of your lead — those are the elements that your brain uses to perceive punch and definition. When reverb softens those first few milliseconds, the sound loses impact even if it gains atmosphere.
This is especially pronounced in trance mixing, because the genre lives in the tension between two things that seem like opposites: huge, atmospheric space and tight, driving punch. You need both. A breakdown needs reverb tails measured in seconds. A driving snare needs to crack through the mix even while that reverb is still ringing. These requirements genuinely conflict — and the default approach of just adding reverb and hoping for the best will not resolve that conflict.

The return track setup — always do this first
Before we get to the punch-preservation trick, here is the foundation that everything else builds on.
Never put reverb directly on the channel you are processing. Always use a return track with the reverb set to 100% wet, then send from individual channels to that return. This is not just a CPU optimisation — although it does save roughly 40% processing compared to inserting a reverb on every track — it is also better mixing practice. A single return reverb on a group of related elements (all your leads, all your percussion) creates cohesion that you cannot get from individual per-channel reverbs. They all share the same acoustic environment.
Set up your return track, drop in your reverb, set it to 100% wet. Done. Now send from your channels using the return send knobs. A good starting amount is around -6 dB from the send — that is a subtle blend, not a soak. You can always push it up, but starting conservative keeps you honest.
For reverb plugin choices: Valhalla Shimmer is the go-to for the A&B and FSOE sound, especially in dark mode. Arts Acoustic Reverb is excellent on leads, placed after compression on the return. Blackhole works particularly well on plucks and mid-range elements — it has a character that suits those tighter, brighter sounds. For uplifting trance leads specifically, plate reverb tends to sit better in the mix than rooms or halls — it has a density that fills out the sound without adding the smearing you get from longer algorithmic reverbs.

The decay settings that matter
Here is where a lot of producers go wrong — they use the same reverb settings for everything. So let me give you actual numbers.
For leads: small to medium room, 1.5 to 3 seconds decay. This is the main body of your mix, and you want the reverb to be felt rather than heard as a separate element. At 1.5 seconds it adds dimension. At 3 seconds you start getting that glassy, elevated quality that works on extended notes.
For vocal atmospheres: you can push this to 7 seconds. Vocal atmospheres in breakdowns are often more reverb than source — the reverb tail IS the sound, not an effect on a sound. Do not be afraid of long tails here. They are what makes a breakdown feel infinite.
For drum fills and interactive elements: 3 to 4 seconds. Long enough to spill over the bar line and create momentum, short enough to keep the groove.
For drum fill hits directly: pull it back to 1 to 2 seconds. You want the reverb to wash out between hits, not accumulate into a blur.
During the breakdown, increase the decay to push the atmosphere further. During the driving sections, pull it back so the reverb does not muddy the groove. This is not a set-and-forget parameter — it is something you automate or at minimum manage across the arrangement.

The glue compressor trick — the actual punch-preserver
Alright, here is the technique. This is the one that changes things.
After your reverb on the return track, add Ableton’s Glue Compressor. Or any buss compressor with an adjustable attack. The settings are specific and they matter.
Attack: 30 milliseconds. Release: 0.1 seconds. Threshold: around -4 to -5, enough to trigger on the peaks but not constantly squashing.
Here is what that attack setting does. When a transient hits — the crack of a clap, the snap of a pluck, the initial click of a lead attack — the first 30 milliseconds pass through the compressor completely unaffected. The compressor has not responded yet. Those first 30 milliseconds are the transient, the part that your ears register as punch and definition. They go through clean.
After 30 milliseconds, the compressor engages and brings down the reverb tail. The body and the bloom of the reverb gets gently reduced. The fast 0.1 second release means it recovers quickly between hits, so it is not constantly holding the reverb down — it only clamps when something peaks.
The result is that the initial transient is preserved exactly as it was before the reverb, and the reverb tail is brought under control. You hear the crack, then the space. Not the space eating the crack.
Apply this to your crash return, your clap return, your pluck return, any element where you are using heavy reverb and noticing that the impact is softening. For leads with long atmospheric reverb, it is a good idea on that return as well.
Try it now on a snare or clap. Add a heavy reverb to a return, send the snare to it at maybe -3 dB, then drop the Glue Compressor after the reverb. 30ms attack, 0.1s release, threshold just touching the peaks. Play it back. The crack will be right there where it was before you added the reverb. That is the trick.
EQ the reverb output — always
This one is easy to miss and makes a big difference. Reverb picks up whatever you send it, including all the low-frequency energy. Sub-bass, kick body, low-mid mud from pads — all of that goes into the reverb and comes back as a low-end wash that dulls your mix.
Put an EQ on every reverb return and high-pass it. For most returns, a high-pass somewhere between 200 and 400 Hz is appropriate. For reverb on leads and pads, you might go higher — 400 to 600 Hz. For reverb on high percussion (hi-hats, claps, crashes), you can go higher still — up to 1 kHz.
You can also notch the very high end if the reverb is adding harshness — a gentle high shelf cut at 12 kHz or so can take the edge off reverb on bright elements.
This EQ cleanup is what separates a mix that sounds spacious from a mix that sounds washy. The space is still there — the mud is gone.
Delay as the cleaner alternative for punch-sensitive elements
For elements where you want spatial width but the glue compressor trick still is not giving you enough punch retention, swap reverb for delay. A ping-pong delay set to 1/4 or 1/8 note, 50% feedback, 20 to 25% dry/wet gives you stereo spread and a sense of depth without touching the transient at all. The delay repeats happen after the initial hit, not layered on top of it.
This is particularly useful for plucks and arpeggiated elements. The delay creates motion and width, the original hit stays completely clean, and the combination sounds like a bigger, more professional production than either the dry or the reverb version.
You can combine them. Reverb on a long return with the glue compressor technique, plus a shorter delay on a second return. The delay handles the rhythmic dimension and preserves punch; the reverb handles the atmospheric tail. Together they fill out the space in a way that one processor alone does not manage.
Try this today
Open a project where your reverb is washing things out. Pick the worst offender — probably a lead or a clap.
Set up a return track if you have not already. Reverb at 100% wet, decay 2 seconds for the lead or 1 second for the clap. Send at -6 dB.
Add the Glue Compressor after the reverb. Attack 30ms, release 0.1 seconds, threshold just touching the peaks.
Play it back. That initial hit should be right there — clean and defined — with the space opening up after it. If it feels right, great, move on. If you want more punch, pull the threshold down a touch so the compressor is working slightly harder on the tail.
