How To Make Trance like Calvin Harris — Full Track from Scratch
Build a complete Euro Trance track in Ableton using Serum, 909 drums, AI vocals, and the sound that defined late-90s/early-2000s trance
Sound Familiar?
You’ve heard the Calvin Harris “Miracle” sound — that raw, pure Euro Trance from the late 90s and early 2000s making a massive comeback. You want to make tracks like it, but you don’t know where to start. The sound is deceptively simple — fewer layers, fewer effects than modern trance — but that simplicity is exactly what makes it hard to get right.
You can loop an 8-bar idea all day, but turning it into a full track with proper structure — intro, verses, drops, breakdowns, transitions — feels like a completely different skill. And producing that signature old-school character with modern tools? Nobody shows you how.
This style wasn’t overcrowded with effects and layers. It was pure and raw, using the synth sounds available at the time — and that created a signature sound everybody knows and loves. This masterclass shows you exactly how to recreate it from an empty project.
What Is How To Make Trance like Calvin Harris?
A 1.5-hour masterclass where ReOrder builds a complete Euro Trance track from an empty Ableton project — start to finish. You’ll watch him analyze the Calvin Harris “Miracle” waveform for structure, then build every element: kick, sub bass, 909 percussions, AI-generated vocals, organ melody, Reese bass, strings, acid arp, piano with delay, pluck, choir voice arp, mid bass, and snare rolls. Every sound is built in Serum or with stock Ableton tools, and placed directly into the track arrangement as it’s created.
What makes this different: ReOrder doesn’t just make loops — he builds the full track arrangement in real-time, showing you how to structure drops, breakdowns, and transitions. He also demonstrates using AI vocal generation through Audimee.com and layering a free sampled M1 piano (Noise Piano) for that authentic old-school character. By the end, you’ll have a complete track template and the knowledge to produce your own Euro Trance from scratch.
What’s Inside
🎯 Track Structure & Analysis
Analyze the Calvin Harris “Miracle” waveform to understand Euro Trance structure: intro, verse, drop 1, breakdown 1, drop 2, breakdown 2, main drop, outro. Map out the full arrangement before writing a single note, then build every element directly into the structure as you go — making music, not loops.
🎵 Kick & Bass Design
Build the kick using Vengeance Sounds samples processed through Drum Buss (drive, crunch, boom frequency tuning). Create a sub bass in Serum using Moog pulse width modulation waveforms with MG Low 24 filter and dual envelope modulation for that old-school feel. Add a mid bass layer with triangle + sine waves and 7-semitone detuning for extra energy in the drops.
🎹 Melodies, Chords & Sound Design
Design an organ sound in Serum with phaser and chorus for the intro melody. Build a Reese bass with unison, portamento, and filter automation for breakdowns. Create strings/pad for energy build-ups. Craft an acid arp as counter-melody. Design the main piano melody using Ableton’s Bright Grand Piano layered with the free Noise Piano (sampled M1) — processed with reverb, delay, and glue compressor for that signature Euro Trance piano sound. Build a choir voice arp in Serum using wavetable vocals with LFO volume gating and hyper dimension.
🔧 Percussion & 909 Programming
Program a full 909 drum kit: open hat, closed hat on 16ths with velocity variation and humanization (quantize 16T at 3%), ride on 8ths, clap with Drum Buss and Haas stereo delay, crash with pitched tuning and delay tail, snare roll with automation build-up. Autopan on closed hats for stereo width. Side-chain compression on every element using the classic 1/16 note release technique.
🎤 AI Vocal Production
Source vocals from Splice, transform them using Audimee.com AI voice generation, and even record your own voice as source material. Process with Ableton’s Multiband Dynamics “Vocal Control” preset, delay, EQ, and reverb with side-chain ducking. Create vocal delay throws by isolating individual words and feeding them through high-feedback delay for rhythmic effects.
💡 Arrangement & Mixing Workflow
Build the full track arrangement in real-time: filter automation sweeps for energy builds, crash placement for transitions, rolling kicks for buildups, snare roll crescendos. Use EQ Eight for frequency carving, Haas effect for stereo width, side-chain compression on every melodic element, and gain staging to maintain headroom throughout. ReOrder explains every arrangement decision as he makes it.
